Role Overview & Responsibilities

As a UPS Industrial Engineer, you apply industrial engineering methods — time study, methods analysis, process flow design, and data modeling — to optimize the operational performance of assigned package center or hub facilities, reducing per-unit labor cost and improving service quality through evidence-based operational redesign projects.

• Time Study & Methods Analysis: Conduct formal time studies on sort floor functions using UPS's elemental time data system and direct observation timing — measuring actual method execution times against the engineered standard time for each work element, identifying method deviations that generate above-standard time consumption, and designing corrective method changes that restore the functional area to engineered standard without increasing injury risk or reducing sort accuracy.
• ORION Route Optimization Support: Support ORION (On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation) route engineering for the assigned package center — analyzing daily route data, identifying chronic over-allowed or under-allowed routes using the UPS Business Intelligence reporting suite, and recommending route boundary adjustments, stop sequence modifications, or driver method corrections that reduce total on-road time and fuel consumption across the center's route portfolio.
• Facility Layout & Flow Design: Apply industrial engineering space planning and material flow analysis to sort floor layout optimization projects — modeling package flow paths, conveyor utilization rates, and chute capacity constraints using AutoCAD plant layout drawings and discrete event simulation tools to identify layout modifications that increase facility throughput per square foot without capital construction expenditure.
